I will still argue that jeans are one of the most important pieces in your wardrobe so you have to know how to confidently find perfect fitting jeans. Jeans embody 3 of my favorite things: confidence, timelessness, and versatility. For so many occasions you can definitely wear jeans confidently.
However there is one issue that we all have to face when looking for jeans, which is finding a pair the perfect fitting jeans! Why? Because the perfect jean fit is a personal fit that needs to be able to compliment your body. So I broke down what to look for to help you find the perfect fitting jeans and some tips to help you tackle fit issues!
Tips to confidently find perfect fitting jeans:
1. The fabrication will determine the structure.
- Look at how much cotton is in the denim. When your pair of jeans are made up of more cotton in the denim it leaves less stretch and can be a tougher fit initially. So know that if you have a little more curve you will have to size up in more rigid denim. If you want more stretch go for less cotton and more stretch.
2. Length is for both style & to match your leg length.
- Length is key so you need to know your inseam. This determines the length of your legs and is the length from your crotch to your ankle. Now you can divert from this to suit a styling aspect like a cropped jean, but below are the key inseams lengths.
- Petite is a 27 inch inseam
- Average is 30 inch inseam
- A 32-34 inch inseam will work for longer legs
3. Give yourself some shape
- Details that give shape are the pockets and also the yoke on a pair of jeans. These details are make or break in giving your back side some shape.
- Pockets should sit a little high and a few inches above the crease of the bum. This will give a little lift.
- The yoke is the seam located directly below the waistband and the shape matters. You want it to be in a “V” shape to give yourself a curvier shape.
- The rise is the distance from the middle of the crotch to the top of the waistband. Your rise can help to balance your body proportion.
- Low Rise will measure at 5-8 inches. This is great for a short torso to give it length.
- Mid Rise will measure at 8-9 inches. This is great for medium to longer torso to give balance.
- High Rise will measure at 9-10.5 inches. This rise has been a popular trend and can be universally flattering.
- Ultra High Rise will measure at 11-12 inches. Just like the high rise you can go with this for the trend or for a long torso to create balance.
4. Perfect fitting jeans for curves tips
- Go with a higher rise for coverage
- Look for stretch since jeans with more cotton are rigid. This will allow more give in the fabric to hug your curves.
- If you see a contoured waistband you are covered! A contoured waistband sits higher on the back of the jeans.
Other Jean Hacks
- Can’t go in a fitting room? Try the neck fit. wrap the waist band around your neck. If the band overlaps too much then the fit will be too big and if there is a gap it will be too small. However if the edges just touch, then you have found a good waist fit!
- Have a good tailor to be able to perfect the fit it’s a little off.
- Invest in good jeans. I know that it can be a tough process, but if you invest in a good pair of jeans it will pay off. That extra investment will give you a little more cost per wear.
- If you’re tight on cash try an off-price retailer, like Nordstrom Rack,or Poshmark where you can find deal on great quality brands.
